Athlete of the Month - June 2018

Starboard CrossFit Star Athlete of the Month

HAVE YOU MET... WREN?

We are always paying close attention to each and every individual member here at Starboard CrossFit. We're not just looking to help them get fit, improve themselves and achieve their goals... each month, we like choose an exceptional athlete that goes above and beyond the call of duty; an athlete that stands out as a shining example of an exemplary Starboard CrossFit athlete and family member. Definitely not an easy task with all of the amazing athletes we have!

Then we ask them to share their story in the hopes that it will inspire and motivate others. Most importantly we want to recognize those dedicated members for their hard work and accomplishments, and show the local community that ANYONE can be a CrossFitter. All you have to do is make the choice to give it a try, set goals, and work hard. You may be surprised at what you will accomplish!

This month we want to congratulate an aspiring young woman that is a new member but an old CrossFit friend of ours. We met this young lady when she began her CrossFit athletic journey with us at a previous box and she's since continued down that path shortly after we opened our doors here at Starboard. She's may be a bit quiet, and "though she be but little, she is fierce." We're proud to introduce you to our Star Athlete of the Month for June, Wren Flood.

I'm quite sure everyone at Starboard has met

or at least seen Wren at some point. I say that because Wren is a regular part of our morning crew (the infamous #5amclub) as well as a regular in our afternoon/evening classes. Recently though, she has been dialing up the intensity and putting in some long hours and seriously hard work doing two-a-day workouts. Wren understands that reaching your goals, no matter what they are, does not come without effort, determination, sacrifice, some setbacks, and then success.

"Blood, sweat, and respect... the first two you give, the last one you earn."

- Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson

Wren is a soft spoken but unstoppable powerhouse when it comes to improve her strength and conditioning and her die hard Atlanta Braves. She seems to prefer to let the weights do the talking for her! She is one to always show up to class early greeting every person that walks by with a welcoming smile on her face and determination in her eyes as she stretches, mobilizes and does accessory work before each and every class!

And Wren is always one of the first people to join the team or help out in any way she can whenever we do volunteer or charity work for the community. She was one of the first to arrive, last to leave and hardest working people when our CrossFit community volunteered to serve Thanksgiving to our local needy veterans group.

As you can see, Wren is an integral part of our CrossFit community in more ways than just lifting weights; she helps lift up our entire community and the raises the standard on what it means to be an important part of the Starboard CrossFit family. Stop into any one of our morning, midday, or afternoon classes sometime and be sure to look for that bright smiling face on the girl stretching on the floor in the back and say hi to Wren and many of our other amazing members and join us for a quick WOD. See what all the hypes about!

PLEASE MEET OUR STAR ATHLETE... Wren Flood!

Nickname:

- Blackbird (Thanks Coach Jesse)

Where were you born or where did you grow up?

- I was born & raised in Charleston, SC.

Words to live by ~or~ favorite quote?

- Deuteronomy 31:6 - "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

How has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?

- With CrossFit I have found a community of people that have become friends that I would have never known because we come from such different backgrounds.

What is your biggest Crossfit goal and how close are you to achieving them?

- My goal for Crossfit is to become a better athlete to go into the military. I’m nowhere near where I want to be but I’m getting closer everyday.

What's your favorite exercise, movement, lift, WOD, etc.? or least favorite?

- My favorite movements/lifts are back squats and deadlifts. My least favorite is from my first CrossFit workout... burpee box jump overs.

Favorite food, restaurant, or cheat meal?

- Chips & Queso.

What has been your proudest CrossFit accomplishment so far?

- My proudest achievement would probably be learning to be okay with failure because I fail pretty much everyday at CrossFit. And that’s what I think makes reaching your goals so much better.

What is the most defining characteristic of Starboard CrossFit that sticks out to you?

- The most defining part about Starboard to me is every owner/coach/member’s effort to build a strong sense of community beyond just a class workout. And to be there to give you a kick in the ass even on your worst days when all you want to do is give up.

And Finally, any advice for newbies considering or just beginning their journey into the world of CrossFit?

- My advice for anyone just starting would be to just be patient. Everything takes time to learn and to build strength/skill. Your not going to PR your deadlift everyday.

We're so extremely grateful to have you as part of our Starboard family. Keep up the hard work Wren and we cannot wait to see the fruits of your labor and how all that hard work pays off for you in the near future and beyond! And thank you for sharing your story with us as our Starboard CrossFit Star Athletes for the month of June!
